Making the China Survival Guides: A Station Owner’s Diary

So. We just published the fifth guide in our China Survival Guides series. Five guides. WeChat, Alipay, Taobao, SIM cards, and bank accounts. I wanted to write down how this all happened, because it wasn’t a plan. It was more like… one question led to another, and suddenly I was building a whole series.

It Started With a Question I Couldn’t Answer

A friend was coming to China. He asked me: “How do I pay for things? Can I use my American credit card?” I said, “Well, you need WeChat Pay or Alipay.” And then he asked, “How do I set those up?” And I realized… I didn’t have a good answer.

So I went looking. Forums, Reddit, TripAdvisor, expat groups. And what I found was… a lot of confused people asking the same questions over and over. “My Alipay account got frozen.” “My face verification failed.” “I can’t receive SMS codes.” “My foreign card got rejected.” “I opened a bank account but I can’t use it.”

The Guides Grew Out of Real Pain

We started with WeChat. Then Alipay. Then Taobao. Then people kept asking about phone numbers and bank accounts. So we did the SIM card and bank account guide.

The SIM Card Rabbit Hole

I thought SIM cards would be simple. Buy a card, put it in your phone, done. Ha. Turns out there are two completely different products from 3HK that look similar but work totally differently. One is a local prepaid SIM with a real Hong Kong number. The other is a travel eSIM that’s data-only — no number, no SMS, just internet.

The Bank Account Maze

Bank accounts were worse. You need a phone number to open a bank account, but you need a bank account to… you see where this goes. HSBC Premier requires 500,000 RMB. But if you get Premier in one country, you’re Premier everywhere. “One place Premier, global Premier.” And Industrial Bank (CIB) is different from ICBC — don’t mix them up.

What I Learned

Official sources lie by omission. Forums are gold. Details matter more than breadth. Verification is everything.

What’s Next

Five guides done. Are we finished? Probably not. People keep asking questions. Every question is a potential guide.
