Quick Start — TL;DR
- Download WeChat (international version) and register with your real mobile number.
- Verify — complete SMS verification and passport real-name verification.
- Link card — bind a Visa/Mastercard in Wallet – Bank Cards.
- Start paying — scan QR codes / show your payment code. Check limits in Wallet before large payments.

00Read this first
This chapter solves: deciding whether WeChat is worth the setup cost at all, and what the next twenty minutes should look like.
WeChat is not a messaging app you install and figure out later. It is closer to an operating system for daily life in China: chat, payments, official IDs, transit tickets, restaurant ordering, hotel booking, work coordination, and customer support all run through it. If you have family, friends, suppliers, customers, students, or colleagues in China, sooner or later someone will say "just add me on WeChat" — and there is no good substitute.
The hard part is not using WeChat. The hard part is getting registered cleanly, because the first 24 hours determine whether your account survives the next five years. Do steps 1–5 of this manual carefully, once, and you will not have to think about them again.
- Chapters 1–2 — what you are actually installing, and what you must prepare before you touch the app.
- Chapters 3–4 — the registration walkthrough and the one hurdle that stops most Americans (friend verification).
- Chapters 5–9 — hardening, contacts, payments, devices. Do chapter 5 the same day you register.
- Chapters 10–13 — when something breaks, and how accounts get banned or stolen.
- Chapters 14–17 — US legal context, FAQ, glossary, printable quick card.
- Register with a real carrier SIM that you will keep for years — not Google Voice, not a burner. Your number is your account.
- Line up a friend who already uses WeChat before you start, and have them physically present or on a video call. This defuses the verification wall in chapter 4.
- Set your WeChat ID deliberately when prompted. You get one free choice, then only one change per year.
This handbook covers the international version of WeChat registered with a non-mainland (+1) number. WeChat's UI strings, verification thresholds, and payment rules change without notice, and Tencent publishes different rules in different languages. Where a number is widely reported by users but not printed in Tencent's official docs, it is written as a range or flagged ⚠ fluid. Where it is official, a source is given. This is a practical guide, not legal advice (chapter 14).
01WeChat vs Weixin — what you are actually installing
This chapter solves: knowing which of the two products you are actually installing — the difference decides what you can pay for.
In English-speaking coverage people use "WeChat" for one app. In reality there are two products whose differences matter to you.
| Feature | WeChat (international) | Weixin / WeChat 微信 (mainland) |
|---|---|---|
| Registered with | A non-mainland phone number (e.g. +1) | A mainland China number (+86) |
| Where you get it | US App Store / Google Play, search "WeChat" | China App Store / Chinese Android stores |
| Wallet | International wallet — bind Visa/Mastercard/JCB/Discover etc. | Mainland wallet — requires Chinese ID + Chinese bank account |
| Real-name verification | Passport accepted | Mainland ID card required in practice |
| Cross-talk | Yes — both can chat, call, join groups, and add each other normally | |
| Mini Programs | Many work; some require a +86 account or Chinese ID | Full access |
| Red packets / P2P transfer | Limited with foreign cards (see ch. 8) | Full access |
| Official support, English | help.wechat.com, English portal available | Chinese primarily |
Install WeChat from your US app store and register with your US number. Do not go hunting for the mainland build. Feature availability is determined mainly by the region of your registered phone number, not by which app package you download — so side-loading the Chinese version will not unlock the Chinese wallet for you, and it creates a support mess later.
- Publisher / developer should be Tencent (Tencent Technology (Shenzhen) Company Limited or WeChat International).
- The correct US App Store listing historically shows tens of thousands of ratings. If a copycat shows almost none, delete it.
- Never install a WeChat IPA/APK from a link someone sent you in an email or a group. Fake WeChat clients exist and they harvest accounts.
02Before you start — eligibility and prep checklist
This chapter solves: the phone-number decision you cannot undo later, plus the prep list to finish before you tap Sign Up.
Spend ten minutes here. Almost every failed registration traces back to one of these rows.
2.1 The phone number is everything Most important decision
WeChat enforces one number → one account, permanently. The number is your login, your recovery path, and what appears when someone shares your contact card. Choose a number you can keep for at least five years.
| Number type | Works? | Why / comments |
|---|---|---|
| Postpaid US carrier SIM (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, US Cellular) | Best | The gold standard. Real SIM, real billing relationship, stable for years. |
| Prepaid US SIM (with your real name registered) | Good | Fine — as long as you keep it alive. Do not let it expire, ever. |
| Google Voice | Blocked | VoIP. WeChat's help center names it explicitly as unusable. Usually fails at the SMS stage or fails later. |
| Skype In/Out, RingCentral, Nexmo/Vonage, TextNow, Burner, Project Fi style numbers, online SMS-receive sites | Blocked | Same VoIP / shared-number problem. Public "receive SMS online" numbers are worse: your verification code is visible to the entire internet, and the number has registered hundreds of accounts already. |
| Work-issued US mobile number | Risky | Fine technically — but if HR changes your plan or you leave the job, your account dies with the number. Use a personal line. |
| US number you already used on an old WeChat | No | One account per number. Recover the old one (ch. 12) instead. |
| eSIM travel data number | Varies | ⚠ fluid Only register on a number you control long-term; travel eSIMs get recycled. |
If you register with a Google Voice number and it does slip through, you are not safe — you are on borrowed time. VoIP-registered accounts carry a much higher risk of restriction, in-app payment blocks, and bans that cannot be appealed successfully because you cannot prove control of the number. Start clean.
2.2 Prep checklist
- A US number on a physical SIM, receiving SMS normally, not a VoIP or recycled line.
- Phone has cellular data working. Register on cellular, not Starbucks Wi-Fi, not your corporate VPN.
- iOS 14+ / Android 8+ with plenty of free storage (WeChat grows to several GB fast).
- App Store ID / Google account ready — you need it to install the app.
- A real, reachable WeChat friend (see ch. 4) — ideally in the room with you.
- An email address you control — international accounts can bind email for recovery. Do it on day one.
- A password you have never used anywhere else, stored in a password manager.
- Your passport if you ever want WeChat Pay.
- 15–25 minutes of uninterrupted time and no flaky network switching mid-flow.
Numerous readers make this mistake: they land in Shanghai, fail to receive the SMS because of roaming, and burn a whole day. Register and fully verify while still in the US, ideally at least 48 hours before departure. Then test payment at home by scanning a QR from a friend.
2.3 Things WeChat does and does not let you do
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Register on a computer / web? | No Registration is mobile-only. |
| Sign up with Facebook / Apple ID? | Avoid Offered sometimes, but it creates recovery problems later. Use your phone number. |
| Two accounts on one number? | No One number = one personal account. Use WeChat Work (企业微信) for a business identity instead of a second personal account. |
| Use it in the US without a VPN? | Yes WeChat works fine on US networks; no VPN needed. (Reverse case: in China, Google/Gmail etc. are the ones that need help.) |
| Call regular phone numbers from it? | No The old paid "WeChat Out" dial-out service is unavailable in most markets. Voice/video calls only work WeChat-to-WeChat. |
03Registering step by step (the main path)
This chapter solves: the registration flow screen by screen, with the points where people get stuck flagged in advance.
Open WeChat and follow along. Every screen below includes what you should see, so you can tell the difference between a delay and a hard failure.
Open the app → tap Sign Up (注册), not "Log In".
The buttons sit at the bottom of the welcome screen. Do not pick the Facebook or Apple icon; those paths add complications at recovery time.
You should see: a region selector and a phone number field.Confirm the country code is +1 United States.
The app usually auto-detects it from your SIM. If it guessed something else, tap the code and search "United States" — this matters, because a wrong region can route you into the wrong verification rules.
Common mistake: typing another leading 1 at the start of the number. The +1 is already there. Type the 10 digits only.Read the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then tick agreement.
Actually skim them. Anything you send through WeChat traverses Tencent infrastructure; chapter 14 has the practical summary in plain English.
Enter your name in the name field.
This becomes your WeChat name / nickname (the text friends see above your messages). You can change it later freely. Two schools of thought: use your real name if this is a business account (Chinese counterparts find anonymous handles suspicious), or use a neutral handle if privacy matters. Either works — just decide now instead of typing "test123" and forgetting it.
Note: this field is your nickname, NOT your WeChat ID (微信号). The ID comes later and behaves completely differently.Complete the human/bot check.
A slider puzzle or a "select all the…" grid. If it loops forever or never validates, you are very likely on a network WeChat distrusts — switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data and start the step again.
Tap send code, then wait for the SMS.
A 4–6 digit code arrives by text within seconds to a couple of minutes. Do not hammer "resend". Repeated attempts inside one session trigger rate limiting that can lock you out for hours.
No code after 2 minutes? Jump to chapter 10, row "SMS never arrives" — carrier-side spam blocking is the #1 cause and never obvious.Enter the code.
Codes expire in a few minutes. If it rejects a code you know is correct, request a fresh one — do not retry the expired one repeatedly.
Security verification — the wall.
For many non-mainland registrations, WeChat now insists an existing user vouch for you. A screen with a QR code appears. This is not optional and there is no skip button. Read chapter 4 before you reach this step.
Create your password.
Use a password manager and generate something long and unique. This is your actual login credential, not the SMS code.
Set your WeChat ID immediately when prompted. Irreversible-ish
Your WeChat ID is the permanent handle people can search for: letters (must start with one), digits, underscore, hyphen; 6–20 characters; globally unique. Official rule: once set, it can be changed only once per year. That is not a typo — one change per twelve months.
Pick something professional and timeless: firstname-lastname, or firstnamelastname. Avoid birth years, company names you might leave, and anything embarrassing. Write it down — you will type it for other people constantly.Set an avatar, then decline the contact-sync prompts for now.
Use a real photo of your face if this is for business — trust runs high on face photos in Chinese business culture, and a default grey avatar gets ignored or treated as a bot. WeChat will offer to scan your phone contacts to find existing users; you can do that later deliberately (ch. 6), so say no for now.
You are in. Do not close the app yet — go to chapter 5.
- "Operation too frequent" / "System busy" → stop. Wait several hours (many users report needing to wait ~24 h), then retry once on cellular data. Repeated retries reset the cooldown timer.
- "This phone number cannot be used" → you are on a VoIP/recycled number. There is no appeal. Get a real SIM.
- App crashes or freezes on the puzzle → kill and relaunch, clear connectivity, update the app to the current version from the app store.
报错处理:"操作频繁/系统繁忙"→ 停手,等数小时到 24 小时再来;"该手机号无法用于注册"→ 说明是虚拟号,无法申诉,只能换实体 SIM。
04Passing "friend verification" — the hurdle that stops most Americans
This chapter solves: the security check that stops most Americans — what your helper must do, and what to do if you have nobody.
Somewhere after the SMS code, WeChat may show a screen asking you to get an existing WeChat user to scan your QR code, sometimes labelled "Help Friend Register" or "Security Verification". It exists to stop mass registration. It is also the single most common reason a US user gives up.
Treat this step as a scheduled appointment, not a surprise. Before you even open WeChat, ask a friend, colleague, or relative who uses WeChat: "I'm registering tonight around 8pm — can you scan a QR code for me? It takes 30 seconds and only works for about 3 minutes." Have them on a video call or sitting next to you.
4.1 The helper's side (send them this)
Open WeChat → tap + (top right) → Scan.
Must be scanned through WeChat's own scanner. The phone camera app or a QR widget in control centre will not work.
Point at the QR code on your screen (or at your friend's screenshot you sent them).
Tap Confirm on their screen. They may be asked to enter their own WeChat password or verify within their account.
Done. Your registration continues automatically.
4.2 Who qualifies as a helper ⚠ fluid — the app decides
The eligibility rules are not fully published and shift over time. Reports from users cluster consistently around these conditions:
| Condition | Reported requirement | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Account age | At least several weeks; often cited as 6+ months | Pick your most established WeChat friend, not the person who joined last week. |
| Recent assists | Has not verified anyone in roughly the last month | If it rejects them, ask someone else. Rejections are not personal. |
| Total assists | A small cap per year (commonly reported as 3) | Don't burn your friends' quotas re-registering; get step 10 (WeChat ID) right the first time. |
| Account standing | No recent violations, restrictions, or unpaid issues | Avoid helpers whose own account has been flagged. |
| Bound payment | Sometimes required to have WeChat Pay bound | If the first helper fails, try someone who definitely pays with WeChat in China. |
| QR lifetime | A few minutes (commonly ~3 min) | Refresh when expired. Have the helper ready before you generate it. |
4.3 If you genuinely do not know anyone with WeChat
This is a real situation for many Americans, and it deserves honest answers rather than magic tricks.
| Option | Realistic? | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Ask a colleague / supplier / anyone in your China orbit | Best | Almost everyone who works with China has one. Ask in Slack or email: "does anyone have WeChat and could scan a QR for me tonight?" You will usually get three volunteers. |
| Ask the Chinese person you want to talk to | Best | The contact you are registering for is often the ideal helper — and it establishes trust immediately. |
| Chinese community groups, churches, universities, alumni networks near you | Good | Chinese-language churches, cultural associations, and university CSSA groups all have members who can help in person. |
| Change conditions and retry: different network (cellular vs Wi-Fi), different time of day, different device | Sometimes | ⚠ fluid Some users report the requirement disappearing on a retry; others report it never disappearing. Worth one or two attempts over 24–48 hours, but do not build a plan on it. |
| Contact WeChat / Tencent support directly | Sometimes | Submit through the in-app help ( |
| Paid "registration services" and online QR-assist sellers | Do not | These violate WeChat's terms, frequently use recycled numbers, permanently taint your account, and often involve fraud networks. The account you get may be restricted within days. |
Do not pay strangers online to "verify" you, and do not hand control of your phone to anyone. A person who can scan a QR for you can also, with a different QR, take over your account. Do it with someone you know, in real time, watching your own screen.
05The first 30 minutes — mandatory setup
This chapter solves: the half hour of setup that decides whether the account survives the next five years.
Do this the same day you register, in this order. It takes twenty minutes and prevents roughly 90% of the disasters in later chapters.
5.1 The non-negotiable five
Bind an email address.
Me → Settings → Account & Security → More settings / E-mail → Bind
This is a privilege overseas-registered accounts get that mainland accounts do not. It gives you a second recovery path when you lose the phone or the number. Enable it now, verify it now, do it before you need it.
Turn on every account-protection switch you can find.
Me → Settings → Account & Security — review login protection, login alerts, and device management. Lock it down to maximum.
On the international app these toggles move around between versions; walk the whole screen and turn on anything that protects logins.
Lock down who can find you.
Me → Settings → Friends Permissions / Privacy → "Ways to add me"
Turn off discovery channels you do not want. Keeping phone number searchable means anyone whose contact book contains your number can find you — including that person you met at one conference in 2019. Turning off group and QR discovery stops drive-by adds from WeChat groups.
Set Moments and profile visibility.
Settings → Friends Permissions → Moments & Status — choose who sees your posts, and whether strangers can view the last ten.
Default is wide open. Most Americans want "Friends only" plus Moments history limited to "last three days".
Enable notifications properly — then test them.
Me → Settings → New Message Notifications, plus your phone's OS notification permission.
Android users: also go into system settings → battery → disable optimization for WeChat, and allow background data. Without this you will miss messages for hours, which looks rude to your Chinese counterparts even though it is not your fault.
5.2 The privacy matrix — decide once, relax later
| Setting | Recommended for business use | Recommended for personal use | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find me by WeChat ID | On — it is your business card | On, it is the convenient channel | Friends Permissions → Ways to add me |
| Find me by phone number | On if China-facing | Off | Friends Permissions |
| Find me via group chats | Depends | Off | Friends Permissions |
| Moments visibility | Friends only | Friends only | Friends Permissions |
| Moments history for strangers | Off | Off | Friends Permissions |
| Friend request verification question | Usually off — slows business | On | Friends Permissions |
| Contacts synchronisation | Optional | Off | Settings → Account & Security / Privacy |
| Read receipts | Does not exist on WeChat — nobody can see whether you read a message. Relax. | — | |
| "Last seen" | Does not exist either. | — | |
Me → Settings → General → Language → English. If you ever get stuck on a Chinese-only screen, the path order in this handbook is stable even if labels differ — and the glossary in chapter 16 maps the terms.
5.3 Day-one safety habits
- Write down your WeChat ID and password in your password manager. Then write your WeChat ID in your email signature if you work with China — saving people a search is a small professional kindness.
- Send yourself a "test" message. Ask your helper to message you, then reply with text, an image, and a voice message — confirm all three arrive both directions before you trust the account.
- Do not add thirty people in one hour. Aggressive adding on day one is the classic signature of a spam account, and it gets new accounts restricted. Ten per day for the first few days is plenty.
- Never share your login QR code. Logging into desktop WeChat requires scanning a QR — that QR grants full account access. Only ever scan it yourself, on your own screen.
特别提醒:微信没有已读回执、没有"最后在线",不必焦虑。头几天每天加人别超过十个,短时间猛加好友会被判营销号。桌面微信登录用的二维码等于账号钥匙,绝不能发给别人扫。
06Finding and adding people
This chapter solves: finding people when you have no Chinese contacts, and the etiquette Americans reliably get wrong.
Adding contacts is WeChat's most culture-dependent feature. Americans assume search works like Facebook. It does not — and the differences cause endless confusion on both sides.
6.1 Six ways to connect, ranked
| Method | How | Works? | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. QR code card | Me → (top) QR icon → your personal QR; the other person scans, or you scan theirs | Always | Default choice. Works offline, in person, on a video call, or pasted into an email. Chinese users are extremely accustomed to it. |
| 2. WeChat ID search | Chats → + or Contacts → + → Add Contacts → search box | Yes, if exact | When you have their ID written down. Case-insensitive, must be character-perfect, and the other person must not have disabled discovery. |
| 3. Contact card forwarding | Open a mutual friend's profile → ··· → send their contact card to a third person | Yes | The polite intro. How introductions are actually made in China. |
| 4. Phone number search | Add Contacts → enter their number | Conditional | Only works if their number is registered, searchable, and visible to you. |
| 5. Contacts matching | Settings → upload/match phone contacts | Conditional | Convenient but leaks your entire address book's hashes to WeChat. Only do it deliberately. |
| 6. People nearby / Radar | Add Contacts → People Nearby / Radar | Avoid | ⚠ fluid Availability varies by version and region. It is also a privacy hazard — disable or ignore it. |
- They turned off "find me by phone number" or "by WeChat ID".
- You are typing _ where they used -, or vice versa.
- You have a US-registered account searching someone who restricted visibility by region.
- Your account is new and has soft limits on how many searches you can run per day.
Solution that always works: say "please send me your WeChat QR card". Every Chinese user knows exactly what that means and it takes them four taps.
6.2 Group chats
- Joining a group larger than 100 members requires real-name verification of WeChat Pay for most accounts. ⚠ fluid — but it explains why you suddenly cannot join a big supplier group until you complete verification in chapter 8. Plan for it.
- Groups are semi-public. Every member can see every other member's avatar and can tap it to try adding them. If you join a professional group, expect follow-up friend requests from strangers.
- Group QR codes expire (typically a few days) — asking someone for "the group link" a week later may not work.
- Mute aggressively. Chinese work groups are high-volume; mute (··· → Mute Notifications) rather than leaving, because leaving is visible and noticed.
6.3 Etiquette Americans get wrong
| Situation | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| They send a 50-second voice message | Normal. Long-press → Convert to Text works well for Chinese voice messages; English transcription is weaker. Politely replying by text is fine — nobody expects you to send voice back. |
| They ask "are you there?" (在吗) and wait | A classic opener, not a demand. Answer when convenient; synchronous chat is not assumed. |
| You reply in English | Fine. Use the built-in translator liberally: long-press any message → Translate. This is genuinely good and the single most useful feature for English speakers. |
| They never use your name | Chinese users often set nicknames per-chat; ask them what they want to be called. |
| A red exclamation beside your message | You have been deleted or blocked, not merely unread (see ch. 10). |
| Messages on Moments comments | You only see comments from people who are also your friends. It is not a bug — it confuses every Westerner. |
07Core features, explained for newcomers
This chapter solves: the features with no Western equivalent — Moments, Official Accounts, Channels and Mini Programs.
7.1 Chat mechanics worth knowing
| Feature | What you need to know |
|---|---|
| Voice & video calls | Free WeChat-to-WeChat over data or Wi-Fi. Quality is generally good internationally, but cross-Pacific calls degrade with latency; have a backup (WhatsApp/FaceTime) if the call matters. Group video calls are supported. |
| Voice messages | Hold-to-record, release to send. Swipe up for hands-free mode; you can cancel by sliding to the discard icon before releasing. |
| Translate | Long-press any text message → Translate. Set your target language once, then every message gets a one-tap translation. |
| Quote & reply | Long-press → Reply to thread in group chats (essential in busy groups). |
| Recall | Long-press your own message → Recall, within a short window (roughly 2 minutes). Everyone sees "recalled a message" — there is no stealth. |
| Favorites | Long-press → Favorite, your personal pinboard for notes, locations, and links across devices. |
| File transfer limits | ⚠ fluid Large files and oversized originals get recompressed or rejected. Treat WeChat as a courier, never as storage. |
| File Transfer / 文件传输助手 | A built-in "chat with yourself" helper perfect for moving links and files between phone and desktop. |
| Search | Chats → top search bar searches messages, contacts, official accounts, mini programs, and web results in one box. |
| Stickers | Long-press any sticker → Add to favorites, or download packs from the Sticker Gallery. Chinese sticker culture is expressive and playful; a well-timed sticker is a relationship lubricant. |
7.2 Moments (朋友圈)
Facebook-like feed, but with rules that differ from what you expect:
- Comments are visible only to mutual friends. If you comment on someone's post, your other friends cannot see it unless they also know the poster. This is by design.
- Likes are visible to everyone who can see the post — and yes, people notice.
- You can restrict per post: composer → "Who can see" / "Remind who to view". Use it for work vs. personal audiences.
- New contacts see a limited slice of your history depending on your privacy settings — tighten this before you accept your first fifty contacts.
- Long-press the camera icon in Moments to post text-only; the normal icon requires an image or video.
7.3 Official Accounts (公众号), Channels (视频号), Mini Programs (小程序)
| Feature | What it is | Notes for US users |
|---|---|---|
| Official Account | Publishing channels for brands, media, and government — like a newsletter inside WeChat | Following works normally. Creating one requires business documents (business licence, ~US$99 verification fee for formal verification) — plan for it if you need a company presence. |
| Channels (视频号) | Short-video feed | Availability and features vary by account region. |
| Mini Programs | Lightweight apps inside WeChat — food ordering, transit, hotels, utilities, government services | Many work with an international account; some refuse non-mainland accounts or demand a Chinese ID. This is the single biggest functional gap versus a +86 account. |
| WeChat Work (企业微信) | Separate business app that connects to external WeChat contacts | The right answer for a second work identity. Never run two personal accounts — that is how people get banned. |
7.4 Desktop and web
- Install the official WeChat desktop app (macOS/Windows) — log in by scanning the QR with your phone, and approve on the phone.
- Desktop is a second screen, not a replacement. Some tasks (Moments, many payments, some mini programs) must be done on mobile.
- Desktop → Settings (phone): Me → Settings → Accounts & Security → Logged-in devices shows active sessions. Lock your phone, lock this session.
- Always tap "Log Out" on shared or hotel computers. Otherwise your account stays alive on that machine.
- Web versions exist but are unreliable and sometimes unavailable to newer accounts — the desktop app is the dependable choice.
08WeChat Pay for Americans
This chapter solves: whether WeChat Pay works with a foreign card, what it costs, and exactly where it stops working.
Paying is where WeChat stops being a chat app and becomes infrastructure. In much of China cash is unwelcome and foreign credit cards are refused at the till — but WeChat Pay with your US card works at millions of merchants.
8.1 The honest capability table
| What you want to do | With a US card on an international account | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pay a merchant by scanning their QR / showing yours | Yes | The core use case. Restaurants, taxis, metro, convenience stores, hotels, supermarkets, online shopping. |
| Take a Didi / ride-hailing, order Meituan food delivery | Usually | Generally supported once bound and verified. |
| Receive a red packet (红包) | After real-name verification | Without verification you will be blocked from claiming them. Do the passport step if you will spend Chinese New Year with anyone. |
| Send a red packet to a friend | Generally no | Foreign cards typically cannot fund red packets or P2P transfers. Send a physical gift instead. |
| Transfer money to an individual | Generally no | Same restriction. Overseas cards are merchant-payment instruments, not wallet funding. |
| Top up WeChat balance with a foreign card | No | Balance top-up is not a supported flow for overseas cards. |
| Split a bill in a restaurant | Varies | Depends whether the merchant flow is merchant-payment or transfer. |
| Get money back out again | No | There is no clean withdrawal path for foreign-card funds. Spend it, don't park it. |
8.2 Fees — the official rule
Tencent's Tenpay rule for international ("foreign") card transactions: transactions of RMB 200 or less are fee-free; for transactions above RMB 200, a 3% service fee applies to the full transaction amount. If a transaction is refunded, the fee is refunded proportionally. (Source: Tenpay official notice on international card payment rules.)
Promotions change the picture — WeChat has run new-user programmes offering fee-free allowances for a period after first binding a card. Those expire; check the current offer inside the wallet before assuming anything.
Keep purchases under ¥200 per transaction when you can — splitting two ¥150 purchases instead of one ¥300 purchase saves the fee entirely. For larger amounts, accept 3% as the cost of convenience, plus whatever your card issuer charges for foreign transactions. Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee card.
8.3 Limits
| State of your account | Reported capability |
|---|---|
| Before real-name verification | Very limited — low daily/monthly ceilings, often not usable for meaningful travel spending |
| After verification with a passport | Fuller limits — commonly cited ceilings are in the range of about ¥6,000 per transaction, ¥50,000 per month, ¥60,000 per year. ⚠ fluid |
| Large payments | Some Chinese sources and government guides also frame limits in USD terms (e.g. per-transaction and annual caps) — these are different framings of the same anti-money-laundering rules. Treat all figures as indicative and check the current figures inside the wallet. |
8.4 Setting it up
Update WeChat to the newest version (App Store / Play) and make sure you are logged in.
Open the wallet: Me → Services (服务) → Wallet (钱包). If you cannot see "Services", you may need to enable it in Settings → General → Discover/Service pages.
Start verification: Wallet → Cards / Bank Cards → Add Card. You will be asked for identity, usually before or during card entry.
Enter your name exactly as printed on your passport — including the order of given/family names as they appear in the machine-readable zone. Mismatches are the most common reason verification fails.
Upload your passport photo page when prompted; some flows also request a short selfie or video. Do this in good light on a flat background.
Wait. Verification is sometimes instant, sometimes several hours, sometimes longer. Do not resubmit repeatedly — duplicate submissions slow things down.
Add your card: card number, expiry, CVV, and the phone number registered with the card for SMS validation. Visa and Mastercard are the most reliable; JCB, Diners Club, and Discover are widely reported as supported.
Set a payment password — a separate 6-digit code from your login password. Do not reuse your login password. Write it in your password manager immediately; forgetting it means a reset dance.
Test at home if you possibly can: have a trusted person send you a payment request, or buy something from a merchant QR before you travel.
- Never use WeChat Pay to move money for someone else, no matter how good the story or commission sounds. This is the standard money-laundering pattern and it is exactly what gets accounts frozen and owners questioned.
- Do not buy someone else's verification or use a borrowed passport.
- Avoid informal currency exchange groups ("换汇") that promise better rates. They are a classic fraud vector and frequently involve proceeds of crime — your account becomes evidence.
Even with WeChat Pay working, bring: (1) a physical Visa/Mastercard, (2) some RMB cash, (3) Alipay as a second wallet set up with the same card. Three independent rails means one failure never strands you.
09Devices, backup, and not losing your history
This chapter solves: not losing years of chat history the day you change phones.
The uncomfortable truth: WeChat chat history lives on your device, not in a permanent cloud you can log into from anywhere. Understand this before you lose a phone.
| Scenario | What happens | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Log in on a second phone | The first phone is kicked out | Normal behaviour — one active mobile session at a time. Always get logged in first on a plane/hotel before wiping the old device. |
| Desktop + phone at once | Allowed, both live | Remember to log out of shared machines. |
| New phone, no migration | History is gone unless you migrated | Use Settings → Chats → Chat History Migration/Backup while you still have both devices on the same Wi-Fi. |
| Backup to PC | Encrypted local backup | Restoration requires the same setup — do not rely on it as your only copy. Export truly important content (contracts, photos) to your own cloud. |
| Lose the phone AND the number | Account recovery becomes extremely hard | Bound email + remembered password + trusted friend verification, all prepared in chapter 5. |
| Storage pressure | WeChat grows to tens of GB | Settings → General → Storage → Manage periodically; offload media you actually want to your own storage first. |
- Old phone still has your WeChat logged in and working. Do not log out yet.
- Both phones on the same stable Wi-Fi, both plugged into power. Migration can take an hour or more with lots of media.
- New phone: log into WeChat → Settings → Chats → Chat History Migration (Backup & Restore / Migrate) and follow prompts.
- Confirm contacts and Favorites appear on the new phone before wiping the old one.
- Re-verify payment on the new device if prompted, and re-check that notifications work.
10Troubleshooting matrix
This chapter solves: every common WeChat error, in four tables you can scan while you are stuck.
Find your symptom, run the fixes in order, top to bottom. Stop as soon as one works.
10.1 Registration & verification
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Fixes, in order |
|---|---|---|
| SMS code never arrives 收不到验证码 | Carrier blocks international short codes; wrong country code; too many resend attempts | 1) Confirm you selected +1 and entered 10 digits. 2) Check carrier spam/short-code blocking — T-Mobile's scam-blocking features, AT&T message controls, and Verizon spam filters have all been reported to eat WeChat codes; disable them or add an exception. 3) Toggle airplane mode on/off. 4) Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data (or vice versa). 5) Reboot and try once more. 6) Wait several hours, then one clean attempt — never a rapid-fire retry. |
| "Operation too frequent" / "Try later" 操作频繁 | Rate limiting triggered by repeated attempts | Stop completely. Wait several hours to ~24 h. Retry once, on cellular, ideally from a different network. Additional retries restart the cooldown. |
| "This phone number cannot be used for registration" 该手机号无法注册 | VoIP / virtual / recycled number | There is no appeal. Switch to a real carrier SIM that has never registered WeChat before. |
| Puzzle / human check never validates | Network reputation, VPN, ad-blockers, corporate firewall | Disable VPN and private DNS/ad blockers; switch to cellular; try another device; update the app. |
| Friend verification QR keeps expiring before anyone scans | QR lifetime is only a few minutes | Have the helper ready and watching before you generate it — video-call them both you and sharing your screen, then generate and let them scan. |
| Helper is rejected as ineligible | Account too new, recently assisted someone, or annual cap reached | Try the most established WeChat user you know; then try someone else who pays with WeChat. It is not personal. |
| Can't get past "set WeChat ID" — ID already taken | IDs are globally unique | Add a suffix: name-usa, name1968, thename.work. Do not settle for something you will want to change — you get one change per year. |
10.2 Login & access
| Symptom | Cause | Fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Logged out for no reason | Someone logged into your account on another device, or you triggered a risk rule | Assume compromise. Log in, change password immediately, review Settings → Account & Security → Logged-in devices and remove unknown ones, then review bound email/number. |
| Can't log in on a new phone — demands verification | Standard security gate on unfamiliar devices | Use the in-app flow: send SMS to your bound number, or have a trusted friend verify. This is why chapters 5 and 12 matter. |
| Forgot password | — | Use bound email/number reset: Log in → Forgot password. Overseas accounts have more recovery options precisely because they can bind email — do it now if you haven't. |
| Number lost / ported away | Account recovery emergency | Immediately start the recovery flow (ch. 12) using bound email, password, and trusted-friend verification. Speed matters — act before anyone else uses the number. |
10.3 Messaging & contacts
| Symptom | Meaning | Fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Red exclamation next to your message | They deleted you or blocked you — it is not a delivery failure | Try sending anything else: if it prompts "send friend request", you were removed. Politely reconnect through another channel. It is often accidental. |
| Can't find someone by phone number | They disabled discovery, or the number isn't the one on their WeChat | Ask for their WeChat ID or QR card. |
| Can't add anyone for a while | New-account or behaviour-based soft limit | Slow down. Spread adds over days. Use QR codes instead of bulk search. |
| No notifications | OS permission, Do Not Disturb, battery optimisation | Check app notification permission, in-app Settings → New Message Notifications, and Android battery optimisation exemption + background data. |
| Video call connects but no audio/echo | Permission or network | Grant microphone permission; try headphones; switch networks; check whether either side has a restrictive VPN. |
| Someone can't hear my voice messages | Slow upload | Stay on one network until the upload completes; resend if it shows a progress spinner. |
10.4 Payments
| Symptom | Cause | Fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Card binding rejected by issuer | Your bank declines the cross-border linking request | Call the number on the back of your card and authorise international/China transactions, then retry. Try a different card brand. |
| Real-name verification fails | Name mismatch, blurry passport photo, unsupported document | Match your passport exactly (including name order); retake the photo flat and well lit; retry once. Repeated failures → contact support. |
| Payment declined at the till | Limit reached, issuer block, or merchant doesn't take foreign cards | Check remaining limits in the wallet; confirm with your issuer; fall back to your physical card or cash. |
| Can't claim a red packet | Not real-name verified | Complete passport verification (ch. 8). Red packets expire in 24 hours — you'll need a new one. |
| Charged more than expected | 3% fee above ¥200 + your issuer's FX fee | Keep transactions under ¥200 where practical; use a no-FX-fee card. |
| Payment function greyed out entirely | Account flagged, or restricted payment rights | Check for in-app notices; see chapter 12 for restricted accounts. |
- help.wechat.com — official help articles, including English content.
- Me → Settings → Help & Feedback — in-app support; you can attach logs.
- Tencent / WeChat Pay hotline: 95017 — from outside mainland China dial +86 571 95017.
- In-app support mini-programs: search 腾讯客服 / WeChat Team official account for appeals and announcements.
11The pitfall guide — 40 ways to ruin your WeChat experience
This chapter solves: the forty specific ways people damage their own account — most of them inside the first week.
Collected from the failures that actually happen to US users, sorted by consequence. ■ FATAL can end your account. ■ COSTLY costs money or time. ■ ANNOYING wastes an afternoon.
A. Before you register Getting it right first time
1. Registering with Google Voice, Skype, or any VoIP number
WeChat explicitly blocks these; if one slips through, the account carries permanent risk flags and you cannot prove ownership later.
Use a physical carrier SIM under your own name.
2. Using a work number you don't own
You leave the job, HR recycles the line, your account is gone with no recovery path.
Always a personal number that you control the billing on.
3. Registering in a rush on hotel or conference Wi-Fi
Shared, flagged networks are the top trigger for registration blocks and looping bot checks.
Cellular data, calm environment, fifteen quiet minutes.
4. Letting a friend "help" you register on their number
Their number owns your account. You have no recovery rights and they can recover it from you.
Register on your own number even if it is harder.
5. Setting a throwaway WeChat ID like "user8291"
You get one change per year, and your ID is how people find and remember you professionally.
Choose firstname-lastname style; treat it as your permanent handle.
6. Skipping the Terms of Service because they are boring
You are agreeing to data practices that differ fundamentally from Western apps.
Read chapter 14's plain-English summary before you tick the box.
7. Buying a "pre-verified" or "aged" WeChat account online
Violates the terms, seller retains recovery control, many are fraud-recovered accounts. Bans are permanent and you lose everything with no support.
Never. Register yourself, always.
B. Setup mistakes
8. Not binding an email address
Removes your second recovery path. Intentionally bound email is a privilege of non-mainland accounts — unused, it might as well not exist.
Bind and verify an email on day one.
9. Reusing a password from another service
Credential-stuffing attacks hit WeChat accounts constantly.
Password manager → unique generated password → today.
10. Never checking "logged-in devices"
Web WeChat sessions and old desktops can stay alive for months.
Review quarterly: Me → Settings → Account & Security → Logged-in devices.
11. Leaving phone-number discovery on
Every person who has ever had your number in a contact list can find and add you.
Decide deliberately per chapter 5.2.
12. Uploading your entire address book automatically
Irreversible-ish, and reveals your social graph to the platform.
Skip at registration; enable later only if you actually want it.
13. Giving WeChat no notification permission, then missing messages for days
Chinese business communication assumes near-real-time replies; silent absence reads as ignoring people.
Enable notifications + Android battery optimisation exemption; test with a friend.
14. Leaving Moments wide open to strangers
Default settings often let non-friends see your history.
Friends-only + limit history window before you accept your first contacts.
C. Behaviour that gets you restricted
15. Adding 50 strangers in your first afternoon
Textbook spam-account signature; new accounts are watched closely.
Ten per day for the first week. Let the account age.
16. Running two personal accounts / buying a second number for "work WeChat"
Multi-account behaviour triggers bans; there is no appeal that will save both.
One personal account + WeChat Work (企业微信) for business.
17. Installing unofficial "dual-open / multi-account" modded clients
Third-party modded WeChat clients are the fastest documented route to permanent bans — and they also expose your credentials.
Official app only, from official stores.
18. Renting or lending your WeChat account
"Rent your WeChat for $50/month" ads are money-laundering recruitment. Participants face account destruction and real legal exposure in China.
Hard no, every time, no exceptions.
19. Forwarding unverified political/religious/health content to groups
Content that is ordinary speech in the US can violate platform rules and get accounts restricted.
Keep controversial forwarding off WeChat entirely — including in "private" groups, which are not private.
20. Sending bulk identical messages to your whole contact list
Mass-messaging detection — even a harmless holiday greeting blast can trip it.
Use Moments or an Official Account for announcements instead.
21. Using aggressive third-party plugins for red packets or auto-reply
Unauthorised automation violates terms and is monitored.
Use only features built into the official app.
D. Payments
22. Assuming your card works everywhere in China
Foreign cards are merchant-only instruments here, and some merchant categories refuse them.
Keep cash + physical card + Alipay as parallel rails.
23. Ignoring the ¥200 fee threshold
Transactions above ¥200 incur a 3% fee; people pay hundreds in fees needlessly.
Split larger purchases; or accept 3% knowingly.
24. Typing your name differently than your passport shows
The single most common real-name verification failure.
Copy the machine-readable-line order exactly.
25. Acting as a money mule — "receive a payment for me and forward it"
This is laundering, whatever the story is. Accounts get frozen and the owner becomes a person of interest.
Refuse completely, then report the contact.
26. Using informal currency-exchange groups ("换汇")
Frequently criminal proceeds; accounts get frozen as evidence.
Banks and ATMs only.
27. Forgetting your 6-digit payment password
Reset requires identity re-verification, which can take time and patience.
Store it in your password manager the moment you set it.
28. Using a card that charges foreign transaction fees
You pay 0–3% to Tenpay and another ~3% to your bank.
Bind a no-FX-fee travel card.
29. Expecting to withdraw a balance back to your US card
Overseas cards don't support top-up or withdrawal flows.
Only load what you intend to spend.
E. Security & privacy
30. Letting someone scan your login QR code
The desktop-login QR grants full account control. Scam: "scan this to join our group" while the QR is actually a login request.
Never scan for someone else. Check the on-screen wording every time.
31. Sharing your SMS verification code with anyone
Theft pattern: they register using your number and ask you to forward the code.
Codes are passwords. Nobody legitimate ever asks for one.
32. Treating WeChat as end-to-end encrypted
WeChat does not offer default E2E encryption as consumers understand it; assume messages may be reviewed or accessed.
No passwords, no card numbers, no privileged legal/medical content, no export-controlled technical data. Use Signal for genuinely sensitive topics.
33. Installing it on an employer-issued device without checking policy
Many US employers and agencies restrict or monitor it; some prohibit it outright.
Personal phone for WeChat. If you must, get written permission first.
34. Discussing business that touches export controls or client privilege
Cross-border data transfer plus the absence of E2E encryption creates real compliance exposure.
Use your corporate approved channel for anything regulated.
35. Clicking links inside random group messages
Phishing and malware distribution via group links is routine.
Don't. Verify through a second channel before opening anything unexpected.
F. Data & device
36. Switching phones without migrating chat history
History is device-local. No migration = permanent loss.
Follow the checklist in chapter 9 while both devices still work.
37. Treating WeChat as your only copy of contracts or photos
Files expire, get compressed, or vanish with the device.
Export important items to your own cloud or email immediately.
38. Letting WeChat storage balloon until the phone is full
Tens of gigabytes is routine after a year in active groups.
Quarterly clean-up: Settings → General → Storage.
39. Never logging out of hotel / shared desktops
Your account stays live on that machine.
Always explicitly log out and delete the session from your phone's device list.
40. Letting the number lapse while travelling or switching plans
A recycled number lets the next owner attempt recovery of your account.
Keep paying for that line forever, change your number inside WeChat first (Settings → Account & Security → Phone → Change), and keep email bound.
Real SIM that you own · Bind email on day one · Unique password · Never give anyone your QR login or SMS codes · One personal account only — use WeChat Work for the rest.
12Your account was limited or blocked — now what
This chapter solves: what to do the day WeChat limits or blocks you, and how to never need this chapter.
WeChat restrictions come in flavours. Identify which you have before acting, because acting wrong wastes your one good attempt.
12.1 Know what you're dealing with
| Restriction | What you can still do | Usually caused by | Recoverable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft warning (pop-up notice after login) | Almost everything | A report, a borderline behaviour trigger | Read & acknowledge; often self-resolving |
| Function limited (can't post Moments / add friends / certain payment) | Chat works | Behavioural flags, new-account activity | Yes, with time or self-service unblock |
| Login blocked pending verification | Nothing until verified | Unfamiliar device, or your number changed hands | Yes — friends-assisted verification |
| Payment frozen | Social features work | Suspicious transactions, laundering suspicion | Possible — needs documents and patience |
| Temporary block (with stated end date) | Nothing | Clear violation | Wait it out; do not re-offend |
| Permanent ban | Nothing but withdrawal of remaining funds | Serious or repeated violations | Almost never reversed |
12.2 The recovery playbook
Read the notice word for word. Take a screenshot. It usually tells you which specific behaviour triggered this — that determines your next move.
Try the self-service unblock first. Typically Me → Settings → Account & Security → WeChat Security Center / Security Center → Unblock Account, then follow the prompts. This is the recommended route and often succeeds instantly.
If asked for SMS verification — note carefully: virtual numbers such as Google Voice are explicitly excluded from unblocking per WeChat's own help documentation. You need control of the original number. ⚠ fluid
If asked for friend-assisted verification, line up a trusted WeChat friend in advance, exactly as in chapter 4, and have them confirm.
Submit an appeal if you believe it is wrong: through the notice's appeal link, the WeChat Team official account, the support mini-program (search 腾讯客服), or Me → Settings → Help & Feedback. Write plainly, in short sentences: what happened, when, why you think it is an error, and what you will change. Include your WeChat ID.
Wait without spamming. Multiple simultaneous submissions slow everything down. Give each attempt reasonable time.
If it's permanent: focus on withdrawing any remaining funds within the stated window and accept it. Build the new account cleanly — and this time, bind the email.
- Don't immediately register a new account on the same device/network — it can inherit the restriction.
- Don't pay a "recovery service." They cannot bypass Tencent's decisions and many are pure scams preying on panicked users.
- Don't argue aggressively in support tickets. Calm, factual, brief appeals get reviewed more sympathetically.
12.3 Prevention beats appeal
Every item below removes a future failure mode, and each takes under a minute:
- Bound email day one
- Unique password in a manager day one
- Two or three trusted friends who could verify you in an emergency
- A written record of your WeChat ID, bound number, and registration date stored outside the app
- Quarterly device-session review
- Behaviour discipline from chapter 11
13Scams targeting WeChat users
This chapter solves: recognising the scams that specifically target WeChat users before they cost you money.
WeChat is a high-trust, high-speed social network with money attached — which makes it a prime target. These are the patterns seen repeatedly.
| Scam | How it works | Defence |
|---|---|---|
| "Send me the code" | Text: "I'm switching phones, can you receive a verification code for me?" They are registering a new account on your number, or taking over yours. | Never forward any verification code. Ever. To anyone. Including people you know — their account is probably already stolen. |
| Impersonation clone | Someone copies a friend's avatar and nickname, then messages their contacts asking for money or gift cards. | Verify by a voice or video call before acting on any money request. This single habit defeats most of these. |
| Login QR swap | "Scan this QR to join the group / claim your reward." It is actually a desktop login confirmation. | Never scan on someone else's behalf. Always read the confirmation screen on your own phone. |
| Account rental recruitment | "Rent your WeChat account, $50/month, we handle everything." | It is laundering recruitment. It destroys your account and exposes you legally. Report and block. |
| Fake refund QR | "Your order refund failed, scan this QR to complete it." | Refunds never require scanning an unknown QR. Handle refunds inside the original merchant flow only. |
| Too-good pricing / parallel FX | Very attractive RMB exchange rates in groups or DMs. | Banks and ATMs only. |
| Fake investment or lottery group | Strangers add you into a buzzing investment group with screenshots of returns. | Leave. Do not engage, do not "try with a small amount". |
| Support impersonation | Accounts claiming to be WeChat support asking for your password or a code. | Real support never asks for your password or SMS code. |
| Charity / medical emergency | Emotional appeal with payment details, often impersonating an acquaintance. | Verify through another channel before donating. |
| Job offers requiring you to receive payments | "Remote work, just receive transfers and forward them." | Textbook money-mule job. Illegal in every relevant jurisdiction. |
Anything involving verification codes, QR scans, or moving other people's money — stop. Every catastrophic WeChat story begins with one of those three.
14US legal and privacy context
This chapter solves: whether using WeChat is legal where you live, and what your data actually does once you send it.
This chapter summarises publicly reported events and general considerations so you can ask better questions of your own lawyer, employer, or compliance team. Rules change; verify anything that carries consequences.
14.1 Where things stand
| Date | Event | Effect on ordinary users |
|---|---|---|
| 2020-08-06 | Executive Order 13943 directed restrictions on WeChat transactions | Would have removed it from US app stores |
| 2020-09-20 | Federal judge (N.D. California) issued a preliminary injunction, citing First Amendment concerns | Restrictions never took effect |
| 2021-06-09 | Executive Order 14034 formally revoked EO 13943 and similar orders | Ban withdrawn; Commerce directed to assess foreign-controlled apps case by case |
| 2023-06-01 | Montana restricted the app on state government devices | None for personal users |
| 2024-04 | Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (names ByteDance/TikTok) creates a broader designation mechanism | WeChat is not named in the statute; the mechanism exists but has not been applied to it |
| Today | WeChat remains available on US app stores and legal for personal use | No federal prohibition on individuals installing or using it on personal devices |
14.2 Practical guidance
| If you are… | Consider |
|---|---|
| An individual on your own phone | Personal use is legal and widespread. The realistic risks are privacy and security, not criminal liability. Keep sensitive categories of information off it. |
| A government employee or contractor | Check your agency's written policy. Several jurisdictions restrict WeChat on government-issued devices. Personal device use may still have reporting or record-keeping implications. |
| Employed by a company with a compliance programme | Personal phone for WeChat wherever possible. Many employers restrict it on managed devices. If it is work-related and you must use it, get approval in writing first. |
| Handling regulated data | Do not route export-controlled technical data, client-privileged communications, PHI (medical), or source code through WeChat. Use approved corporate channels. |
| A business relying on WeChat for revenue | Concentration risk: if availability ever changes, your customer channel disappears. Keep at least one independent contact method for every key relationship (email + phone, recorded outside WeChat). |
| Travelling to China | Finish registration and payment setup before departure. Assume that once you land, both troubleshooting and support become harder. |
14.3 Privacy, plainly
- WeChat is not end-to-end encrypted by default. Do not treat it like Signal or WhatsApp. Assume messages are stored and could be reviewed, and that metadata is collected.
- Your data crosses borders. WeChat operates under Chinese law; understand that before putting anything confidential in it.
- Assume groups are public. Even a "small" group can have members you don't know, and screenshots travel instantly.
- Separate the personal from the professional. Keep genuinely sensitive conversation on a different tool, and use WeChat for coordination and relationship building — which is exactly what it's best at.

Register today on a real US carrier number you will keep for years, with a trusted WeChat friend standing by, choosing a professional WeChat ID you can live with. Within a day, bind email, harden privacy, enable notifications, and record your credentials. Add people gradually, preferably by QR. Set up WeChat Pay with your passport and a no-FX-fee card if you'll be in China, keeping purchases under ¥200 to avoid the 3% fee. Never hand anyone a verification code, never let anyone scan a login QR, never move money for someone else, and never install modded clients or run two personal accounts. Back up chat history before changing phones. That's it — everything else is detail.
Handbook version: October 2026 edition. WeChat's interface strings, verification thresholds, payment limits, and fees change without notice. Anything marked ⚠ fluid is user-reported rather than printed in official documentation and should be confirmed inside the app before you rely on it.
Official sources referenced include Tencent's WeChat help portal (help.wechat.com) and Tenpay's published notice on international card payment rules. The legal timeline in chapter 14 summarises publicly reported executive orders, court actions, and statutes and is provided for context, not as legal advice.

WeChat FAQ for Foreigners
Can I register WeChat with a US phone number?
Yes. Install the international version of WeChat, choose your country code, enter your mobile number, and verify with the SMS code. Use a real number you can keep, because it is tied to account recovery.
Why is WeChat asking for friend verification (QR scan)?
New accounts are often asked to have an existing WeChat user scan a QR code to confirm the signup. Ask a friend who has used WeChat for more than six months. If you know no one, register before you travel.
Why won’t my verification SMS arrive?
Common causes are carrier spam filtering, roaming problems, or virtual numbers (Google Voice rarely works). Try the voice-call code option, check spam filtering, use a real mobile number, and wait before requesting another code.
How do I complete real-name verification as a foreigner?
Go to Me – Settings – Account Security – Identity Verification and verify with your passport. Real-name verification is required for WeChat Pay and raises payment limits.
Can I use WeChat Pay with a foreign bank card?
Yes. After passport verification, bind a Visa, Mastercard, or other supported foreign card in Me – Services – Wallet – Bank Cards. Keep your bank’s 3D Secure / SMS verification working while abroad.
Why is my foreign card declined on WeChat Pay?
Declines are usually caused by the issuing bank blocking the transaction, a failed 3D Secure check, or an unverified identity. Confirm with your bank, retry with another card, and keep single payments below the card’s daily limit.
What are the payment limits for foreigners?
Limits depend on your verification level and card. Unverified accounts face low caps; passport verification raises them. Check Wallet – Bank Cards for your current limits before large purchases.
I forgot my password. How do I get back in?
On the login screen choose Forgot Password and verify by SMS code to your registered number. If the number changed, use the account appeal flow with your passport and a friend’s assistance.
My account is frozen or logged out. What should I do?
Use the in-app appeal (Account Security – WeChat Security Center), submit your passport info, and ask a qualified friend to assist verification if requested. Never buy an “aged” account – they are frequently banned.
Can I use WeChat without a Chinese phone number?
Yes for chat and basic use with a foreign number, but a mainland +86 number is needed for a mainland bank account and some local services. A Hong Kong number does not substitute for a mainland number at banks.
Can I use WeChat on a computer or a second phone?
Yes. Link a computer via Me – Settings – General – WeChat for Windows/Mac QR login. You can stay logged in on one phone plus computers; logging in on a second phone signs out the first.
How do I stop strangers adding me or protect my privacy?
Go to Me – Settings – Privacy and turn off Add Me by Phone Number / WeChat ID search if you want, review Moments visibility, and enable Account Security alerts. Never share your verification codes with anyone.
