Overview
The Yaesu FT-4XR is a compact, lightweight dual-band starter HT: 5W/2.5W/0.5W, 200 channels, 1750mAh battery, low price (~$70) — good for driving, light outdoor use and as a backup.
Key specifications
- Power: 5W / 2.5W / 0.5W
- Channels: 200
- Battery: 1750mAh (small/light)
- Mode: analogue FM only; no digital/APRS
- Positioning: lighter/smaller/cheaper than FT-65R, but less rugged / no IP rating like FT-65R
vs FT-65R
The FT-4XR wins on light/small/cheap; the FT-65R on IP54 splash, MIL-STD, 1W loud audio and sturdier build. Both analogue with similar features — choose by “do you want portable/cheap”.
Programming notes
Same as the FT-65 family: VFO to set frequency → F menu for tone/offset → long-press *V/M to store; PC via CHIRP (Yaesu FT-4XR) + cable.
Core difference vs FT-65R?
4XR is lighter/smaller/cheaper; 65R is more rugged, waterproof, louder. Both analogue.
Good as a main radio?
Great for light outdoor / backup / tight budget; for heavy or rough use prefer FT-65R.
Does it have APRS?
No. For APRS see the FT-70DR.
