Yaesu FT-70DR — Manual Overview

The FT-65R upgrade path when you want digital/APRS.

Overview

The Yaesu FT-70DR is a dual-band HT that does C4FM / System Fusion digital and is also analogue-FM compatible, with AMS auto mode select. It is the direct upgrade from the FT-65R when you want digital modes or APRS.

Key specifications

  • Power: 5W (HI/MID/LOW)
  • Modes: C4FM digital + analogue FM (AMS auto-switch)
  • APRS capable: yes, with optional external GPS (FGPS-2) or manual position entry
  • Protection: IP54 + MIL-STD-810; large channel capacity
  • TX: 144–148 / 430–450 MHz

About APRS

✓
Unlike the FT-65R, the FT-70DR is APRS-capable: on a local APRS network it can send/receive position and messages. Needs external GPS (FGPS-2) or manual lat/long. Pure-analogue users are happier with the FT-65R.

vs FT-65R

The FT-70DR adds C4FM digital and the APRS/digital ecosystem, but needs a digital (YSF) repeater or local digital network; the FT-65R stays analogue, simpler and cheaper. Decide by “do you need digital/APRS”.

Programming notes

Plain FM like the FT-65 family (VFO / *V/M / CHIRP). C4FM is configured in digital mode / YSF settings; APRS sets beacon interval and position (needs GPS) in the APRS menu.

Can the FT-70DR do APRS?
Yes. Needs external GPS (FGPS-2) or manual position, then set the beacon in the APRS menu.
How to use a digital repeater?
Set the room/repeater in C4FM/YSF mode; analogue repeaters still work in FM mode.
How much dearer than FT-65R?
Higher tier, typically ~$200+ (USD) depending on channel.
