UV-5R CHIRP Programming
The best way to bulk-program, back up and clone configurations.
Prepare
Install CHIRP (free, open source). Use a K-plug USB cable, install the CH340 driver, and note the port in Device Manager (e.g. ). Charge the radio first.
CHIRP programming flow at a glance
Read from radio
Connect cable (radio off) › power on › CHIRP menu Radio › Download from Radio › Vendor Baofeng, Model UV-5R › pick the COM port › read. Immediately File › Save as a .img backup.
Edit channels
In the Memories table enter: receive freq, transmit freq (or leave for Offset), Tone Mode (Tone/TSQL), Tone & ToneSql (e.g. 88.5), Power, Name. For bulk work, File › Export to CSV, edit in Excel, then Import back.
Write to radio
Menu Radio › Upload to Radio, confirm model and port, write. Do not unplug or power off during write. Re-read afterwards to verify.
Verify on air

The best check is a real QSO on a legal band: you hear them, they hear you, and the tone opens the repeater — that proves the settings are right.
CHIRP errors or scrambled the radio?
Almost always a wrong model chosen on download. Always Download before Upload and keep a .img backup to restore.
What are rToneFreq / cToneFreq in CSV?
rToneFreq = receive tone, cToneFreq = transmit tone. First time, add one channel in CHIRP then Export CSV as a template to avoid wrong columns.
Do I have to use CHIRP for UV-5R?
No. Keypad programming works (see Programming), but CHIRP is best for bulk, backup and cloning across radios.
