UV-K5 Custom Firmware Choice
From "should I flash" to "which one" — explained in one page.
Why flash
Stock firmware is limited. Custom firmware turns the UV-K5 into a “near mid/high-end” radio with a spectrum analyser, SSB, scrambler, USB modulation, finer squelch and battery readout.
Main firmwares
- egzumer (recommended): most active; bundles fagci spectrum analyser, AM fix, scrambler, channel-name editing, RSSI bar, more sensitive squelch, key remap, battery recalibration.
- fagci: SSB demodulation, origin of the spectrum analyser.
- IJV: extended TX range.
- OEFW: RF optimisation.
- LOSEHU: Chinese UI + extras like Doppler.
Trade-offs
i
egzumer drops some stock features: AirCopy, NOAA, factory voice, Alarm, TX1750, power-on password. Weigh what you need.
How to choose
Most users pick egzumer: full features, active community, easy WebUSB flashing. Want SSB shortwave? pick a fagci-based build. Back up .img + CSV with CHIRP before flashing.
Which for a beginner?
egzumer. Most complete, stable and best-documented.
Does flashing lose stock features?
Some (NOAA/voice etc.), but you gain the spectrum analyser and more.
Can firmwares be swapped?
Yes — the bootloader is kept, so you can return to stock or switch any time.
