Battery & charging: longer life and safer use
Li-ion has no memory effect, but storage and charging habits decide its life and safety.
Why the battery matters
Most HTs use Li-ion batteries (e.g. UV-5R BL-5, UV-K5 BL-8, FT-65R SBR-25LI). Proper charging and storage extend life and improve safety.
Li-ion basics
- Li-ion has no memory effect; top up anytime, no need to fully drain.
- Avoid storing at 100%: for long idle, keep about 40–60%.
- Avoid deep discharge (recharge soon after auto-shutdown).
How to charge
- Prefer the OEM cradle / cable.
- Third-party cradles need a reliable protection circuit; cheap ones may overcharge.
- In the field, use a USB cradle or power bank.
Care tips
- If unused for long, top up about every 3 months.
- Do not charge in high heat or direct sun.
- A swollen battery must be retired immediately and recycled safely — never puncture or burn it.
- Keep a spare in rotation for critical tasks.
UV-K5 calibration
The UV-K5 has a battery calibration (BatCal) menu to fix inaccurate level readings; run it if the percentage jumps oddly.
Compliance note
⚠
Do not mix batteries of different voltage/connector; oversized or boosted packs may stress the radio and affect compliance — use with care.
Battery wears out — what to do?
Usually cycle aging; replace with the same OEM model for safety; check connector and protection board on third-party packs.
Can I leave it charging forever?
OEM management stops at full, but long full storage hurts life; charge when needed, avoid permanent full.
