UV-5R Frequency Settings (VFO/STEP)

Understand frequency mode and step so you can land exactly on target.

VFO (frequency) vs MR (channel)

VFO Mode: type/show a frequency directly — for ad-hoc comms and programming. MR Mode: shows stored channel numbers for daily use. Toggle with VFO/MR. All programming happens in VFO.

Step (STEP)

Menu 1 STEP sets the frequency increment. Use 5.00 kHz normally; for 7-digit frequencies (e.g. 146.24625) set 2.5K. If you can’t land exactly, adjust STEP first.

Enter & fine-tune

In VFO, type the frequency directly (e.g. 438500 = 438.500). Before TX, hold MONI to monitor and confirm the frequency is clear.

Range & legality

i
Receive ~136–174 / 400–480 MHz (some 400–520); TX region-locked. Transmit only on authorised, licensed bands.
Which to use, VFO or MR?
VFO for setting/programming; MR for daily talk on saved channels.
Why can't I enter 438.500?
Be in VFO mode and STEP set to 5.00 kHz; if still stuck, you may be in MR mode.
What if STEP is wrong?
Frequency landing drifts — you may miss or fail to store the target.
