UV-K5 Firmware Update (Flashing)
PTT-to-power bootloader + WebUSB — a safe 30-second flash.
Prerequisites & risk
!
Flashing is “modifying the device” in many regions — confirm local rules allow it. Receive extension is legal; TX unlock is at your own risk. Back up channels with CHIRP first.
Enter flash mode
Steps: power off → hold PTT and power on → screen goes dark and the torch (LED) lights = bootloader (flash mode) active. Keep holding PTT until the cable is connected.
Browser WebUSB flash
Open the egzumer release page FLASH WITH A BROWSER link (or egzumer.github.io/uvtools) in Chrome/Chromium, click Flash firmware, pick the serial port (e.g. / ttyUSB0); ~30 seconds. Do not power off or unplug during flashing.
Done & recovery
Power cycle to boot the new firmware. The bootloader is always kept, so even a bad flash can be recovered with stock firmware — brick risk is minimal.
Common issues
- Browser can’t see device: Snap Chrome has no hardware access — install a native browser; on Linux add your user to the dialout group.
- No Update button: not in flash mode (redo PTT+power).
- Windows needs the CH340/USB-serial driver.
Must I hold PTT to power on?
Yes. Holding PTT while powering on enters the bootloader — the standard flash entry for the UV-K5.
Can a bad flash be recovered?
Yes. The bootloader is preserved; reflash with stock tools/firmware.
Can I flash from Mac / phone?
WebUSB needs desktop Chrome/Edge; some Android browsers work but desktop is most reliable.
