UV-5R Common Faults Quick Reference
One-page lookup for the ten most common issues.
Quick lookup: common-fault table
This is the UV-5R common-fault quick-reference table, in “symptom → cause → fix” columns. For step-by-step help, see the troubleshooting page. Locate your symptom here first, then follow the links.
Common-fault quick-reference
| Symptom | Common cause | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hear but can’t transmit / repeater won’t open | Wrong CTCSS/DCS tone, wrong shift direction, not stored as channel | Check tone (CTCSS/DCS page), confirm shift direction, store as channel then TX |
| CHIRP can’t connect / read fails | Wrong cable or missing driver, wrong COM port | Use UV-5R cable (Kenwood 2-pin), install CH340 driver, pick right COM port in CHIRP |
| No audio / can’t hear | Volume 0, SQL too high, sitting on empty freq | Raise volume, lower SQL, switch to a frequency with signal |
| Keys unresponsive / keypad locked | Accidental keypad lock (long-press # / LOCK) | Long-press # or LOCK to unlock |
| Won’t charge / short battery life | Dirty charger contacts, aged battery, non-original | Clean contacts, replace battery, use original charger |
| Noisy receive / channel bleed | Strong-signal overload, poor antenna, SQL too low | Better antenna, raise SQL, move from base stations |
| Can’t enter frequency | In MR mode, wrong STEP | Switch to VFO mode, adjust STEP (Frequency Settings) |
| Menu / display garbled | Language set to EN or odd charset | Menu 14 set to ZH; if abnormal, reset |
| Short transmit range | Poor antenna, low power, heavy obstruction | Better antenna, higher power, open area |
| Auto power-off / overheating | Low battery, long continuous TX | Fully charge, avoid long TX, check battery health |
“Shift direction” means the repeater up/down shift; “store as channel” means saving from VFO into MR memory. For reset/programming steps see the troubleshooting page and CHIRP page.
Prevention tips
- Before first programming, export and back up the radio’s config (see the CHIRP page).
- Use the original charger and battery; clean contacts periodically.
- Stay clear of strong base-station environments; use a good external antenna when needed.
- Do not unlock TX range — cross-band transmit is illegal and can damage the radio.
Compliance note
⚠
This table only solves usage issues; transmitting outside the amateur bands is illegal (do not mod / use engineering mode to unlock TX). For repairs use authorised channels; do not disassemble.
Does the table replace the troubleshooting page?
No. It is for fast symptom location; detailed steps (reset, programming, tone setup) are on the dedicated pages.
Most common reason CHIRP can't connect?
Nine times out of ten it is the cable or driver: use the UV-5R cable (Kenwood 2-pin style), install the CH340 driver, and pick the right COM port in CHIRP.
