FT-65R and APRS: Compatibility & Limits
Be clear on "can it do APRS" and what to do if you need it.
What is APRS
APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) sends position, weather and messages over radio as data packets, usually with GPS and a built-in TNC (Terminal Node Controller). It is common on digital / dual-mode radios.
Why the FT-65R can't
✕
The FT-65R is analogue FM only: no built-in GPS, no APRS/TNC, no digital modulation. It can only pass analogue voice — it cannot generate or decode APRS packets.
Want APRS — what to do
- Change model: for C4FM/digital + GPS, pick the Yaesu FT-70DR (System Fusion), or an APRS-capable radio (some Kenwood/ICOM).
- External setup: use a GPS APRS-dedicated radio, or phone + APRSDroid + interface cable + any FM radio for “sound-card” APRS (here the FT-65R is only the analogue path; it doesn’t build the packets).
- Receive only: a phone/PC with an SDR or APRS-decoding app can listen to local APRS traffic.
Conclusion
If APRS is a hard requirement, the FT-65R is not the right platform — it excels at reliable analogue VHF/UHF voice and learning. Confirm your needs before buying.
Can I "add a module" to enable APRS on the FT-65R?
It has no TNC/digital baseband; a simple module won’t make it an APRS radio — an external APRS terminal is required.
Can the FT-70DR do APRS then?
The FT-70DR is a C4FM digital radio with System Fusion; APRS capability depends on model/firmware — check its manual.
Can the FT-65R at least receive APRS audio?
It can receive the APRS audio (1200 bps subcarrier), but it won’t decode it into positions — external demodulation needed.
